They are often referred to as exploding rivets due to the way they expand, and also tri tite, bulb tite, and olympic rivets. These rivets have three notches cut into the body of the rivet. They are installed much like a pop rivet, using a riveter to pull the mandrel towards the hat. As the mandrel is pulled in towards the hat, the three sections bend forming three legs. These three legs hold tightly onto the installation surface. Tri-fold rivets break off at the head much like a typical pop rivet will. Tri-Fold Rivets Tri-fold rivets expand in three directions as the mandrel is pulled through them, creating three anchor points. A tri fold rivet has better retention than a standard pop rivet due to their increased surface area on the blind end of the installation. An expanding rivet works better in thinner metals without causing damage to the materials. Tri-fold rivets are also prized for their larger multi-grip capabilities. Due to the way the legs are formed during the installation process, the rivet can grab earlier thus making its range much greater than that of a blind rivet. They also work very well where the back of the installation material is not flat. The legs on these rivets will conform to the edges of the material when pulled against it. Shave Head Tri Bulb Rivets with Sealing Washers Tri-Fold Grip Tri-grip rivets have added benefits in terms of strength and clamping. The three legs that protrude from these rivets are used to better distribute pressure over a surface area. This means, more pressure can be applied to the material without causing damage to it. They also keep a larger portion of the mandrel inside of the body. This added material can help to cure the weaker shear strength of typical blind rivets. Clean and Smooth Finish When properly installed, Shaveable Head Blind Rivets Resemble buck rivets, but are much easier to install. The mandrel on a shaveable rivet's mandrel does not break off entirely on installation. Instead, a portion of the mandrel is broken off and remains in the hat. Then, a rivet shaving tool is used to shave down what is left of the mandrel. This leaves a smooth head surface without the typical hole in the middle that is common on blind rivets. Water Tight Shaveable Rivets Water tight shaveable rivets have a built-in rubber (EDPM) washer attached at the base of the hat. As the rivet is installed the rubber washer will be pushed against the hole it is being installed into. The rubber will expand and fill the hole of any gaps to create a water-tight seal. These are a common choice for RVs and trailers as replacements for the factory rivets that come loose from natural wear and tear.
